Gwalior Fort – This fort dominates the city’s skyline. Indeed, the fort’s majestic magnificence elevates it to the status of one of the world’s most stunning architectural masterpieces. The fort towers around 100 metres above the city. Built in the 15th century under the orders of Raja Man Singh Tomar, the massive fort acquired the name ‘the jewel among Indian castles’ from Mughal emperor Babur. The fort covers an area of over 3 square kilometres and is encircled by sand stone walls. Three temples, six palaces, and many water tanks are located inside the fort.
Man Mandir – Constructed between 1486 and 1517 under the reign of Raja Man Singh Tomar, the colossal edifice boasts stunning architectural colourful patterns evocative of India’s golden history. This is where the ancient Suraj Kund pond is situated. According to legend, it was this pond’s water that healed King Suraj Sen, as suggested by the sage Gwalipa.
Teli-ka-Mandir – This temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is around 100 feet tall. The temple was built in the ninth century AD and its architectural style is Telangana. The structure is a synthesis of Dravidian and Indo Aryan styles. The temple’s roof is in Dravidian architecture, but the building’s decoration is in Aryan style. The temple is named for the oil businessmen who contributed to the building’s construction.
Mohammad Ghaus Tomb – The tomb was constructed in memory of Mohammad Ghaus, a 16th-century saint. The tomb is embellished with exquisite architectural embellishments and latticework. The building is square in design and is surrounded by hexagonal-shaped towers.
There are various more attractions in Gwalior, including the Saas-bahu temple, the Jai Vilas palace, and Tansen’s mausoleum. Additionally, there are various other art galleries and museums, such as the Gujari Mahal Archaeological Museum and the Municipal Corporation Museum.
