    Jaisalmer, termed “The Golden City,” is situated in Rajasthan. It was formerly a princely state. The town is located in India’s largest “Thar desert.” According to the 2001 census, Jaisalmer’s population is around 78000. Jaisalmer district is Jaisalmer’s administrative headquarters. The town was named after Rao Jaisal Yadav, Jaisalmer’s founder and first monarch. Jaisalmer is known as the Golden City because to the yellow sand that gives the city and its surroundings a yellowish golden hue.

Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisal, the Bhati monarch, erected the fort atop Trikuta hill in 1156. Satyajit Ray, the renowned film director, based his detective book Sonar kella or the Golden Fort on this Fort. The primary attraction of this fort is Rajmahal, as well as the temples of Laxminath and Jain. The walls of this fort are painted in a lion hue that fades to honey-gold as the sun sets.

Havelis:

Jaisalmer’s primary draw is its havelis. The principal Havelis are as follows:

Salam Singh ki Haveli: Salam Singh constructed this Haveli in 1815. He was Jaisalmer’s prime minister at the time. The arched roofs embellished with peacock-shaped brackets first catch one’s attention to this Haveli.


Patwo ki Haveli: – This is Jaisalmer’s biggest and most beautiful Haveli. It is a five-story structure that was completed 50 years ago. Guman Chand Patwa and his five sons erected this haveli.


Nathmalji ki Haveli: This was also constructed by a Prime Minister of the princely kingdom of Jaisalmer, Nath Singh. It is ornately painted with birds, elephants, flowers, soldiers, a steam engine, and a bicycle.



Shreenath ji ki Haveli: Built in the 15th century, this Haveli is still inhabited by descendants of the Vyas family. It operates a hotel in the remaining section, Haveli Shreenath Palace. There are just five rooms accessible here.

Jaisalmer’s Jain heritage:

Jaisalmer has traditionally been home to a large number of jain families, as shown by the exquisite jain temples dedicated to Lord Sai Nath, the sixteenth teerthankar, and Lord Parshvanath, the twenty-third teerthankar. The other pilgrimage centres include Brahmsar, Pokharan, Lodavra, and Amarsagar.

Jaisalmer is linked to all major cities in the nation by train and bus, and the city’s internal transportation system is based on automobiles, buses, and private cars.
