Jim Corbett National Park is the country’s first national park, having been created in 1936. Originally named Hailey National Park, it was renamed Jim Corbett National Park in 1956 in honour of Jim Corbett, the hunter of the man-eating tigers in the Kumaon hills. Corbett later in life became a world-renowned animal environmentalist and author of many internationally acclaimed books.
The Recreation Area
Jim Corbett National Park is situated in Uttarakhand’s Nainital district. The park, which covers an area of 1318 square kilometres, is scattered throughout a diverse environment that includes mountains, grassland, rivers, swamps, marshes, and woods. As a result, the wildlife is as diverse as the vegetation.
The Park is separated into two sections: the buffer, or outside region, and the core, or innermost area that remains untouched by human activity. The buffer zone is where travellers go to see animals, while the core zone is dense and human-free.
The tourism area is made up of lush woods and the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary.
Flora:
The park is characterised by extensive Sal woods. Additionally, Corbett is home to around 488 plant species.
Fauna:
The Fauna is diverse and abundant in the Park. Bengal Tigers, Leopards, Elephants, Deer (Barking, Cheetal, Black Buck, and Sambar), Black Bears, Sloths, Yellow-throated Martens, Langurs, and Indian Grey Mongoose are among the species present in the park.
There are around 585 species of birds, both migratory and resident, with some of the most notable being the red jungle fowl, crested serpent eagle, and bloom headed parakeet.
Jim Corbett National Park is also home to 37 dragonfly species, seven amphibian species, seven fish species, and 33 reptile species.
Tiger Project:
The Government of India’s ambitious Tiger Project was launched at Corbett National Park, primarily to protect the park’s endangered Bengal Tiger population.

A visit to Corbett National Park provides a wealth of opportunities to explore and spend quality time in the dark woods, tracking down rare types of animals and unique variations of birds and insects. There are several activities available here, including the following:
• Elephant Safari: One of the most popular activities in Corbett, the elephant safari is both an exciting and thrilling ride on an elephant.
• Jeep Safari: This is a better option for people who want to go further into the woodlands and are up for some adventure. Jeep Safaris take you on a journey into the jungle, and with any luck, you may glimpse a tiger.
• Corbett Museum: The museum is devoted to Jim Corbett, the Kumaon hills’ creator and renowned character. It exhibits some of the man’s weaponry, antique maps, publications, and other memorabilia. The museum, which is in excellent condition, is a fascinating experience in and of itself.
